Speed Bump

A checkpoint the subject places between themselves and an app or site opened without intention.

Procedure

  1. On the phone, open this page and issue a checkpoint for the app. Checkpoints are held per browser, so issue it on the device where it will be used.
  2. Open the checkpoint and add it to the home screen. On iPhone: Share, then Add to Home Screen. On Android: the browser menu, then Add to home screen.
  3. Move the app's own icon off the home screen, into a folder or the app library.
  4. From then on, tap the checkpoint instead of the app. Continuing opens the app.

Limits. This instrument intercepts nothing. A web page cannot stop an app from opening. The checkpoint applies only when its icon or link is used. Opening the app any other way bypasses it. This is by design. The friction is chosen by the subject and can be removed by the subject.

Checkpoints, visit counts and intentions are held in this browser under pf:speed-bump. None are transmitted. Intentions and visit counts are kept for 30 days, then dropped. Where a checkpoint runs the audit protocol, each response is filed to the PF-01 protocol record and counted in its weekly tally. Expunging PF-04 records does not remove those entries.
